Summer 2020 is NOT looking like any previous summer I can remember. While we limit the spread of Covid-19, and stay closer to home, most summer travel plans are canceled. Or greatly changed.

Does that mean you can’t have a great time with your kids right now? No way!

Here are 19 ideas for summer fun that your kids will love. And so will you!

Fun at Home

  1. Camp in the backyard-What kid doesn’t like to sleep outdoors once in a while? Set up your tent and have backyard s’mores to make it really special (ovens and toaster ovens can replace the fire if needed).
  2. Make homemade ice cream-Buy or borrow an ice cream maker and take turns making everyone’s favorite flavors. Try this model for delicious ice cream in a snap.
  3. Have an epic water balloon fight-Use water balloons (or try shaving cream), make teams and go to a nearby park for more space.
  4. Have a weekend movie marathon-Classic choices include the Star Wars saga, Harry Potter movies or…if you’re brave….the Jaws movies. Don’t forget this yummy theatre-style popcorn recipe.
  5. Set up a projector in the backyard and watch films in the yard or pool. Projectors can be found for a low price these days! A white sheet works well for a screen.
  6. Board game night-Get the whole family together to play a few different board games. Order pizza and buy a new game or two to make it a special event.
  7. Recreate their favorite recipes-Take turns cooking up everyone’s favorite foods. Tons of copycat recipes from restaurants can be found online, such as this In-N-Out Burger secret spread.

  4. Drive to an unusual sight or town within a few hours that you’ve never been- Take a picnic lunch or try something new at your destination.
  5. Visit an outdoor market-Some cities are still holding outdoor farmers markets. Bring your mask and keep a proper distance, but also enjoy some craft foods and homegrown produce while supporting local businesses.
  6. Show your support-Buy or bake cookies for first responders in your community, such as firefighters, police or paramedics. Call ahead of time to see what they prefer. Deliver the goodies with a card made by your kiddos.

If You’re Dying to Get Out!

  1. Enjoy a staycation at a nearby hotel- Many resorts are open and have pools and comfy beds that are a treat for kids. Spend a few days lounging and taking a break from the responsibilities of home.
  2. Camping- Few activities are safer than camping. Spend your days hiking, fishing or splashing in the creek. Just wear your mask and wash up after using shared bathrooms. Be sure to read 29 Vital Tips for First-Time Campers.
  3. RVing- Even better than camping, RVs give you a chance at total independence. Just make sure you get a reservation at a campground before leaving home. This is quickly becoming the summer of RVing! Check out Why You Should Go Camping for Your Vacation This Summer for more help.
  4. Take a road trip- After being cooped up for several months, it is exhilarating to get out and just drive away! Plan your route and be prepared to wipe down frequently-touched surfaces in your hotel room.
  5. Visit a State or National Park-Pick the park nearest to you and go exploring. State forests are a great way to get outdoors while staying cool in hot climates. Maybe you’re lucky enough to be close to one of the 7 Best Family Vacation Spots in the US.
  6. Head for the Beach-It’s easy to socially distance at the beach. And what kids don’t love the chance to splash in the waves!

Yes, it is challenging time. But families can still make great memories together. Most of all, take a break from the cares of the world and have fun with your kids. Schedule in some family time and enjoy the summer together.
